Lessons to increase the resilience of the energy sector |

In the energy sector, resilience refers to the ability of this sector to resist, absorb, adapt and recover quickly and effectively in the face of potential disruptions. These may include system failures, natural disasters, cyber attacks, or changes in demand. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the energy sector and posed significant challenges in terms of resilience, as there were changes in consumption patterns, volatility in fuel prices, supply chain disruptions and difficulties in serve consumers. Although the pandemic revealed certain vulnerabilities in the energy sector and the provision of services in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), it was resilient to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The sector's resilience during the crisis was due in part to the rapid adoption of measures by policymakers and regulators to protect consumers and service providers in the short term. At the same C Level Executive List time, it is evident that there is a need to adopt other measures that would ensure the resilience of the energy sector in the long term in the face of new crises similar to COVID-19. From this panorama, the Regional Public Good (RPB) “From the COVID-19 crisis to Resilience: Toolbox for Actors in the Water, Sanitation and Energy Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)”, was conceived as an opportunity to systematize good practices and lessons learned and consolidate peer-to-peer learning.
In addition, the BPR sought to improve the capacity for preparation, prevention, risk management and, ultimately, increase the sectoral response capacity of the participating countries to disasters in a more efficient and effective manner. This BPR directly benefited seven LAC countries: Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Honduras, and Panama, through two lines of action: The creation of a Toolbox with the measures adopted by the sector to mitigate the impacts of COVID The development of case studies in beneficiary countries with the objective of increasing the resilience of the energy sector in LAC.
